So, I did a little wing thing (Or, I did this a long time ago but never bothered to upload it). I’m no wing-major, but I thought it was funny to do and that perhaps someone would appreciate it considering how effing difficult it is to draw wings…

Well if we’re going for realism here…

The pigeon is a fairly strong bird when it comes to flight (among the strongest, in fact), so let’s use the humble “winged rat” as an example here.

Think about how big a pigeon’s breast muscles are compared to the rest of their body. They’re freaking huge, and comprise roughly 35% of their entire body weight.

Now think about how light a pigeon is. The world’s biggest pigeon is almost the size of a turkey, but weighs only 4kg. It only needs to lift 40N of weight, but it needs such large muscles to do so. Muscles that weigh about 1.4kg.

Your average person weighs 15 times that. And since muscle strength is proportional to cross-section (area), not volume, your flight muscles (the blue area in the second-last picture) are going to weigh upwards of 20kg, after you factor in scaling and assume the optimal shape for muscle force-exertion.

That’s 20kg of solid muscle, for a person who weighs only 60kg. And according to the above analysis, those muscles are supposed to be represented by the blue area in the second-last picture.

Somehow I doubt you’re going to pack 20kg of muscle into there. Heck, I doubt you’d even be able to pack 2kg of solid muscle into a 60kg person there, what with all the organs in the way.

Now, if we are talking about angels here, you can skip everything and just have them fly because angels kind of defy biology and physics to begin with.

But if you’re going for some kind of human-bird hybrid or animorph, and you want it to be realistic, you’re going to run into some practical impossibilities. Biological flight and humans simply do not mix.

Watch as people all over the world stampede to buy this anyway and then do nothing about the problems they run into except bitch and whine. Gotta get the latest technology at any cost, after all, so we don’t lose any of our hundreds of faux friends who judge us solely by our material possessions.

This is all a big pile of malarkey. The Kinect (the hardware) must be connected to the console, but the software behind its functions, including the camera, can be completely shut off by the user in the system settings. The “1 in 2 webcams can be hacked” is about as reliable a statement as me saying “1 in 4 family members can be Chinese”.

I can understand how the microphone detail can be unsettling, but it’s about as malevolent as Siri or a voice-activation feature in your new hybrid car.

The bottom half of that “info-graphic” is fear-mongering. Some sources for these suggestions would be nice, by the way!

The “patent” they’re alluding to is for Microsoft to track programmes watched via the XBOX ONE’s online viewing capabilities, and provide “rewards” like gaming achievements for certain implicit tasks. This plan is also expected to be an “opt-in” addition, not a default one. It’s silly and trivial to reward viewership patterns like a supermarket loyalty card, but certainly not dangerous. As The Independent explains, it’s an incentive to watch Game of Thrones and not skip the ads, basically.

The last line-grabbing part refers to another patent by Microsoft intended to crack down on “public performance” viewing by checking to see if the number of people gathered around the set exceeds the arbitrary number that separates “private” from “public”. A little scary from the side of privacy laws, but the patent is extremely unlikely to be granted, due to recent developments in US copyright law. Even then, as I said before, the Kinect can be DISABLED at will by its users, which render the patent quite toothless. An article by Extreme Tech (written nearly eight months ago, I might add) explains the situation nicely.

I actually can’t find anything that would definitively suggest that Microsoft is trying to data-mine its users any more than what’s been previously established under ANY of its other products, like Windows 7 or the XBOX 360’s online features.

Come on, guys, do better than this!

I remember sitting there thinking “this makes no fucking sense”, feeling incredibly disappointed with how Kaworu’s very existence had derailed the show, and raging at the producers for giving me 70 pointless seconds of the same goddamn frame.

And no, the whole point of this scene lasting more than a minute is that production was really running out of money around this point, so they had to either reuse or pan scenes to fill up airtime.
